Knockout CP Freshmart To Defend WBA Minimumweight Title In March

One of boxing’s smallest world champions is getting ready to defend his title in the coming months.

Knockout CP Freshmart, the current WBA minimumweight champion, is set to defend his title in the Chachoengsao Province in Thailand in late March. According to Asian Boxing, no date has been set but the two target dates are March 28 and 29.

An opponent for Freshmart, real name Thammanoon Niyomtrong, has not been decided, but since his last fight was a mandatory title defense, Freshmart does have the option of fighting anyone in the WBA’s top 15 at 105 pounds as an optional title defense.

Freshmart’s last fight also took place in Thailand back in November. In that fight, he won a unanimous decision against Byron Rojas in a rematch from their 2016 bout that also saw Freshmart walk away with a win. Freshmart, a former interim titleholder, has been the WBA champion since 2016 and has made six successful world title defenses. Going down the list of fighters in the top 15, there are already several boxers ranked in the top 15 who have already face Freshmart and lost, including Rojas (No. 7), Rey Loreto (No. 6) and Shin Ono (No. 13).

The 28-year-old Freshmart, unbeaten in 19 fights as a pro, won all three title fights by unanimous decision. Freshmart started 2018 with a win over Toto Landero and proceeded to defeat Xiong Zhao Zhong in July on a boxing card in China that also featured three other title fights with one of them being a world title bout.
