TJ Doheny Signs With Matchroom Boxing, To Defend IBF Title On January 18
IBF super bantamweight champion TJ Doheny has entered the next step of his career, signing a promotional deal with Matchroom Boxing USA.
The company announced that it has signed the Irish champion and his next fight has already been scheduled. Doheny will defend his title on January 18 against an opponent to be named soon. The fight will take place at the Matchroom Boxing USA card at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden with the event being streamed on DAZN.
Doheny, who won the IBF title back in August when he defeated Ryosuke Iwasa, would be making his first world title defense, but Matchroom Boxing has bigger ideas in mind than simply having Doheny defend his title on DAZN. Should Doheny emerge victorious in his next fight, then Matchroom Boxing will move forward with plans to have Doheny unify titles with WBA champion Daniel Roman.
Roman, who also fights for Matchroom Boxing USA, most recently defended his title in October when he stopped Gavin McDonnell in Chicago on DAZN’s first boxing show in the United States. Roman currently does not have a fight scheduled for 2019.
The IBF title fight is now the third world title fight to take place on the January 18 show. A vacant WBO Female super flyweight title fight between Amanda Serrano and Eva Voraberger is also scheduled for the show and Demetrius Andrade’s WBO middleweight title defense against Artur Akavov is set to headline the show. Former world champion Jorge Linares will also fight on the card.
