Amanda Serrano Announces She’s Fighting For A Title In Seventh Weight Class In January
Amanda Serrano is looking to break her own record as part of a larger plan for a potential women’s superfight with Katie Taylor.
Serrano, who previously signed a boxing deal to fight on DAZN, will be fighting for the first time in her new deal with the streaming service next month. Serrano will be dropping down to super flyweight to fight for the vacant WBO women’s super flyweight title. Below is a tweet from Serrano confirming her deal with DAZN and plans for 2019.
It’s OFFICIAL! I’m Fighting January for The 115lb World Title. This will Mark my 7th Division. This will serve as 1 of my 3 fight deal w/@DAZN_USA & @EddieHearn. I’m scheduled to fight Katie Taylor by year end. Looking Forward to 2019. Thanks to my promoter @loudibella —- pic.twitter.com/GMG5jgqkEr

The WBO title was recently vacated by Raja Amasheh, who had held her title since March. Serrano was previously aiming for a fight against Amasheh, but Amasheh then vacated her title, leaving Serrano without an opponent. Part of Serrano’s deal with DAZN plans to have her face off against Taylor, the unified WBA and IBF women’s lightweight champion. Taylor recently fought Serrano’s sister Cindy on a Matchroom Boxing USA card on DAZN in Boston, winning a wide unanimous decision to retain her title.
Serrano is splitting time between being a boxer and being an MMA fighter for Combate Americas, who also have a broadcast deal with DAZN. Serrano holds the record for having titles in more weight classes than any other woman and Puerto Rican boxer in history. Serrano won the WBO women’s junior welterweight title back in September on the undercard of Shawn Porter vs. Danny Garcia for the WBC welterweight title.
If Serrano ends up winning the WBO super flyweight title, it would give her a title in a seventh weight class, joining Manny Pacquiao as the only boxers in history to win a major world title in at least seven weight classes.
