Report: Early Wilder vs. Fury PPV Numbers Point To At Least 300,000 Buys

Good news for the final buyrate for the Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury pay-per-view event.

According to Mike Coppinger, the early rounds of pay-per-view numbers led to a potential final buyrate of at least 300,000. That figure doesn’t include pay-per-view buys from the United Kingdom or digital purchases on platforms such as Playstation 4 and the fight was also shown in movie theaters across the United States.

The report states that the break-even number of buys is 250,000, which means the early numbers could mean a big success for PBC and Showtime, who produced the pay-per-view. If the buyrate ends up being at least 300,000 buys, it would be the most successful pay-per-view event featuring a heavyweight fight in the main event since John Ruiz vs. Roy Jones Jr. back in 2003. That fight finished with a buyrate of approximately 525,000.

The event took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles for Wilder’s WBC heavyweight title. It was the U.S. pay-per-view debut for both Wilder and Fury. Wilder managed to score two knockdowns in the fight, but the fight was ruled a split draw.

Fightful did a post-show podcast after the fight where it was also estimated that the show would likely do somewhere between 300,000-325,000 buys. You can watch the podcast at this link.

Both fighters would go on to talk about a potential rematch between the two and both men said they are interested. Wilder even hosted a media conference call days after the fight and further confirmed his interest in fighting Fury once again.
