Exclusive: Rocky Fielding Is Intrigued How Canelo Alvarez Will Fare At 168 Pounds
When Canelo Alvarez steps up to super middleweight to face WBA “regular” champion Rocky Fielding on December 15, it will be the Mexican’s proper introduction to the 168-pound division.
When Fightful asked Fielding about how his size advantage would help in the fight, Fielding said it will certainly play a role in the outcome, but isn’t sure how the extra weight will affect Alvarez. The British champion added that part of the intrigue of the fight is how Alvarez responds to the higher weight class and is interested in finding that out when the two meet in the ring.
“Yeah, that’s the ingredient to the fight. I’m a big super middleweight, and he’s stepping up. That’s what makes it interesting to see how he is going to adapt to it and how he’s going to be. I’m at a weight to make the weight comfortable, and I’m okay at it. I don’t know how it’s going to be for him, but I’m at the best weight for myself,” Fielding said. “It adds up. He’s a top fighter all around, and he brings that with him as well as moving up in the weight. He carries all that around. So it’s going to be interesting to see him from his last fight, to see how he does in the [move up to weight] and see if he accumulated muscle mass in this short of time. It will be interesting to see in the next week or so. It will be interesting compared to myself and how I make the weight and how I prepare. I make the weight, and then I fight. That’s how I’m prepared.”
While Fielding has spent the majority of his career fighting at 168 pounds, Alvarez has yet to have a true fight in the division. He has fought above middleweight just once in his career, a catchweight bout of 164.5 pounds against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in May 2017.
Fightful will have live coverage of the event, which will feature multiple world title fights. You can listen to the audio of Fielding talking to Fightful in the video above with additional commentary from his trainer Jamie Moore on how he helped prepare Fielding for the fight.
