Report: Luis Nery To Return To The Ring On December 1

Former WBC bantamweight champion Luis Nery is not waiting around to fight again.

Nery will be defending his WBC Silver title against Renoel Pael on a boxing card at the Arena Pavillón del Norte in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. Originally, Nery was supposed to fight Carlos Sardinez, but now Pael has been brought on to fight the former world champion.

This would mean that Nery would be fighting in his second boxing match in the span of two months after not fighting for more than seven months. Nery recently finished a WBC suspension that came as a result of him failing a drug test for a WBC bantamweight title defense in 2017 and then missing weight for a title defense earlier this year.

After his suspension ended, Nery would go on to knock out Jason Canoy on October 6 to win the vacant WBC Silver champion, marking the second time Nery won the title. Nery was recently reinstated into the WBC rankings, being placed No. 4 at bantamweight.

Pael, a 28-year-old Filipino boxer, is a former Asian Boxing Federation super flyweight champion and previously challenged for the OPBF flyweight title in 2015. Pael has lost four of his last six fights.

The WBC title is still vacant, but will soon see a new champion be crowned on December 22. Nordine Oubaali will face Rau’shee Warren for the WBC world title as part of the undercard for Jermall Charlo’s fight against Willie Monroe Jr. in Brooklyn, New York. There is an interim title fight between Petch Sor Chitpattana and Takuma Inoue currently scheduled to take place on December 30 in Japan.
