Bob Arum: Srisaket Sor Rungvisai vs. Jerwin Ancajas “Is Going To Happen” In 2019
A potential super flyweight title fight is happening in 2019 according to Top Rank CEO Bob Arum.
Arum spoke to Manila Bulletin and talked about the odds of having Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and Jerwin Ancajas face off in a WBC/IBF unification. Arum was so confident that the fight would become a reality, that he stated that it “is going to happen.”
“It’s just a matter of knowing the date (and venue),” Arum added.
Arum’s quote comes about a month after the two champions met in Thailand at a One Championship event where the two boxers hinted at a potential unification fight. Previously, it was somewhat hard for the two fighters to face off against each other since Sor Rungvisai was competing regularly on HBO and Ancajas on ESPN. When HBO announced that it was no longer doing boxing broadcasts starting in 2019, this left Sor Rungvisai without a U.S. television home.
Sor Rungvisai had been leading HBO’s efforts to showcase the super flyweight division more often after defeating Roman Gonzalez to win the WBC title in March 2017. Sor Rungvisai would go on to headline HBO’s first two “SuperFly” shows, emerging victorious in both of those title fights.
Ancajas, the IBF champion, has been fighting on ESPN’s multiple platforms since 2017 when he fought on the undercard of Jeff Horn’s upset win over Manny Pacquiao. Since then, three of Ancajas’ last four fights have been showcased on ESPN or on the ESPN+ streaming service.
