Gennady Golovkin Vs. Daniel Jacobs Fight Being Looked At For December 10
Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs’ WBA title unification fight may take place at the end of the year in Madison Square Garden.
Tom Loeffler, Golovkin’s promoter told ESPN that Golovkin’s camp is looking at a December 10 fight date, which HBO had reserved for the new 154-pound champion Canelo Alvarez before a fractured right thumb sidelined for the rest of the year.
Both Golovkin and Jacobs defended their belts on the weekend of September 10. Golovkin is the WBA’s super middleweight champion, while Jacobs is the organization’s regular middleweight champion. The WBA ordered the two fight against one another, giving the two camps until mid-October to reach a deal or a purse bid would be ordered. The two camps also needed to have that match within four months of the announcement being made.
While not the Golovkin-Canelo superfight that boxing fans have been clamoring all year long, this is arguably the best fight for Golovkin outside of Canelo. Golovkin did express interest in fighting Jacobs after GGG defeated Kell Brook on September 10, saying that he wanted to unify every world title belt in the middleweight division. Jacobs retained his title against Sergio Mora in a rematch the day before Golovkin’s title defense against Brook.
Golovkin holds the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight titles. To accomplish his goal of unifying all the middleweight titles, he would need to claim Jacobs’ WBA regular title and Billy Joe Saunders’ WBO middleweight title.
Should Golovkin fight on December 10, it would open up a slot for a November 26 date HBO had originally reserved for Golovkin before Canelo got injured.
