Zeb Colter On Why Alberto Del Rio Pairing Failed

After Alberto Del Rio won the United States Championship in his WWE return last year, he was put in an angle with Zeb Colter that created the Mex-America gimmick which failed on all levels. Colter says he knows why,

Speaking to Sports Illustrated's Extra Mustard section, Colter talked about the reason that the pairing with Del Rio failed.

“WWE failed to take into account that it didn’t make a lot of sense,” said Colter. “Remember, I hated Alberto Del Rio, and he hated me. So, all of a sudden, I disappeared and came back. But it’s not necessarily the first step in wrestling that is the most important, because it’s the second step that identifies and clarifies the first one. That’s what we didn’t do. There was no chemistry, but there was also no logical explanation as to why I would be with Alberto. I said to the guys in the back, ‘I’m not getting the story,’ but people kept saying, ‘Just wait.’ I’ve walked on enough wrestling floors, and I know if a crowd isn’t getting a certain vibe. The chemistry wasn’t there with me and Alberto.”

Del Rio was fumbling around the midcard after his title win, which included being part of the League of Nations stable. His second run in WWE ended in August as he was in the midst of a 30-day suspension due to a Wellness Policy violation and he and WWE parted ways. Colter also got cut from WWE earlier in the summer as he was not featured in television for months at a time.

Colter has since started a one-man show, touring throughout the country while Del Rio has started working the independent circuit.
