Exclusive: Jazz Didn’t Know If NWA Would Strip Her Of Women’s Championship Or Not
The NWA is going through changes, many of which are culminating at this weekend’s NWA 70th Anniversary Show.
NWA now has Billy Corgan and Dave Lagana at the helm, and will see their event crown a new NWA National Champion, and have defenses of the NWA Worlds Championship and the NWA Women’s Championship. For champion Jazz, when the new regime came in, she had no idea what to expect, as she told Fightful.com before her title defense.
As Jazz tells it, she was largely out of wrestling, but the opportunity to make the NWA Women’s Championship her legacy caused a shift in her mindset.
“At the time I was just wondering what was going to happen. It happened overnight. Me knowing Lagana for so many years, he told me ‘be patient Jazz, we’re working on things. Things will pick up.’ That’s what I did. I had taken years off from doing anything pertaining to wrestling. Physically, mentally, my mind wasn’t there. Now, I’m back into Jazz mode. First I was just being mommy, going to work, housewife. I’m back and ready to kick ass. I’m a 46-year old grown ass woman. I have the experience. I’ve been on the biggest platform. There’s nothing on that night that’s going to have me intimidated,” said Jazz.
When Corgan and Lagana came in, nearly all of the NWA’s championships were stripped from their holders, with two notable exceptions — NWA Worlds Champion Tim Storm, and Jazz. For Jazz, she said she wasn’t sure what was going on, or how it would unfold.
“They told me they were going to keep it on me because they had an idea of what they were going to do. They didn’t say they were taking belts from everybody, I didn’t know about that. I didn’t even ask any questions about it. That’s the political side of it. I try not to get involved in that,” she said.
NWA 70th Anniversary takes place Sunday, October 21 from the Asylum in Nashville, Tennessee. You can order the show on Fite TV, and check our our live coverage and discussion here at Fightful.com. We will also be bringing you a live, post-show podcast right after the event.
