Roy Jones Jr. Considering Retirement
Longtime boxer and former pound-for-pound king Roy Jones Jr. said that he might retire after suffering a torn bicep in his last fight back in August.
Jones told ESPN this past weekend that he doesn’t mind retiring after defeating journeyman Rodney Moore via unanimous decision because it was in front of his hometown fans in Pensacola, Florida.
“If I stop now, I’m good with that because I got a win in front of my fans in that last fight,” Jones said. “My biceps, it just popped in the fifth round. My right hand was dead after that even though I threw it a few times. But it’s already feeling a lot better. I’m not sure if this is the end or not. I may fight again if I feel like it, but I don’t know if I will feel like it.”
Jones said that his decision to possibly retire is not due to any lack of financial wealth, but more so his age.
“It ain’t about the money,” Jones said. “I want to fight because I love to fight. I like testing myself, but I’m not trying to fool myself. I’m not 32 anymore. I’m 47 and know I can’t fight forever, but I’m not trying to prove nothing to anyone. But if I have fought for the last time, I can live with that. It was big for me to go home to Pensacola and get a win in front of all those fans who have supported me for so many years.”
The 47-year-old won world titles in the middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions in his 27-year career. Aside from boxing, he is also a part of HBO’s boxing broadcast team, present for the Canelo Alvarez vs. Liam Smith pay-per-view.
