Interim WBC Super Bantamweight Title Fight Taking Place At Korakuen Hall In November
Days after the WBC announced that it will create an interim super bantamweight title, that title fight has a date and a venue.
Former world champion Tomoki Kameda and Abigail Medina will fight for the vacant interim title on November 12 at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. The fight pits two of the best super bantamweight contenders today and are the top two fighters at 122 pounds in the WBC rankings.
The interim title was made after it was revealed that full world champion Rey Vargas was still out with a hand injury and would be out of action for a little while longer. Vargas has only fought once, this past May in New York when he successfully retained his title with a unanimous decision win over Azat Hovhannisyan on an HBO-televised bout.
The winner of the interim title fight, per the WBC’s orders made at the annual WBC Convention, which recently concluded, will be ordered to fight Vargas as soon as he is medically cleared and ready to fight.
This will mark Kameda’s first shot at a title since his two attempts at capturing the WBA bantamweight title failed with two losses to Jamie McDonnell. Kameda previously held the WBO bantamweight title and made three successful title defenses from 2013 to 2014 before his two losses to McDonnell. Kameda is currently riding a four-fight win streak with three of those wins taking place at Korakuen Hall.
Medina, the current European super bantamweight champion, has been riding a ten-fight win streak since suffering two straight losses in 2013.
