Felix Sturm Could Face Prison Time For Failed Test
As England is dealing with its drug case involving its champion Tyson Fury, Germany could be sending Felix Sturm to prison under a new anti-doping law.
According to ESPN, Sturm, the current WBA (Super) super middleweight champion, tested positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol after his majority decision victory against Fedor Chudinov back in February. Sturm’s B sample has not been tested yet and he has not denied any wrongdoing. Sturm was also the WBA, IBF and WBO middleweight champion.
German legislation enacted a new law that would send any German athlete to prison for up to three years if that athlete tests positive for PEDs. The law also indicated that people who also supply PEDs to athletes can face up to 10 years in prison.
German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said that the law was long overdue and that there will be severe consequences for athletes that break the law. He called this law “a clear commitment of Germany for clean and fair sport.”
“I am convinced that we can tackle doping in sport and the criminal structures behind it more effectively with this anti-doping law,” de Maiziere said.
While Sturm is German, the champion did move back to his native Bosnia. He has had notable battles against the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Sebastian Sylvester, Martin Murray and Daniel Geale. He is the first German boxer to be a five-time world champion.
