Badou Jack: “I Would Love” A Fight Against Eleider Alvarez

Two-division world champion Badou Jack currently does not have a fight lined up for him, but he is confident that promoter Floyd Mayweather will get him another world title fight.

Jack spoke with Boxing News about his future and said he would like a fight against current WBO light heavyweight champion Eleider Alvarez as the two boxers have history as sparring partners. Although Jack recognizes that Alvarez appears to be headed for a possible rematch with Sergey Kovalev, whom Alvarez defeated in August to win the title, Jack said he’s open to that title fight if the rematch is not made.

“That’s a possibility. I think he’s going to have to do a rematch with Kovalev, if not I would love that fight,” Jack said.

The 34-year-old Jack has not fought since unsuccessfully challenging Adonis Stevenson for his WBC light heavyweight title. The fight ended in a majority draw meaning that Stevenson retained the title. But after the scores were read and no discernable winner was announced, Jack said he wanted to have a rematch against Stevenson.

Unfortunately for Jack, a rematch against Stevenson might not happen this year as Stevenson was ordered to fight interim WBC champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk. That fight has not been officially announced, but WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman recently said the fight between Stevenson and Gvozdyk is set to take place in Montreal in December. Despite this, Jack said he has full confidence in Mayweather in securing a big fight for him.

This wasn’t the first time Jack has exclaimed his full trust in the former world champion and current promoter as Jack made similar statements when he vacated the WBA “regular” light heavyweight title back in August 2017 under the promise that he would be given a bigger fight than the one against Dmitry Bivol, whom the WBA ordered to fight at that time.

“Floyd is working on a big fight. So we’ll see what’s next, if it’s the Stevenson rematch, if it’s one of the other champions. Floyd always makes it happen. Anyone, it doesn’t matter to me as long as they get me a big fight,” Jack said.

If Jack gets a world title fight next, this would be his seventh consecutive world title fight, a streak going back all the way to 2015. Jack sports a 4-0-2 record in world title fights.
