Notable Changes Made In August WBA Rankings

The always controversial World Boxing Association (WBA) has released its latest rankings for the month of August.

Every month, the WBA, as well as the other major boxing governing bodies such as the WBC, WBO and IBF, releases rankings which give people an idea of who are in the rankings and potentially challenge for a world title.

Below are some of the notable changes from the WBA rankings for July to the new WBA rankings for August:

1. Newly-crowned WBA interim heavyweight champion Trevor Bryan is ranked No. 1 after defeating BJ Flores earlier in August. As a result, Flores dropped from No. 5 in the rankings to No. 10, making room for Dillian Whyte to move up one spot and be ranked in the top five.

2. Tony Bellew, who is close to securing a fight against undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, has been added to the cruiserweight rankings, coming in at No. 8.

3. James Tennyson, who is challenging Tevin Farmer for his IBF super featherweight title, has been dropped from the WBA rankings. Tennyson was ranked No. 1 in the division where Gervonta Davis and Alberto Machado are the WBA’s two world champions. In Tennyson’s place atop the super featherweight rankings is Rene Alvarado.

4. Speaking of Davis, after his recent social media feud with former WBA featherweight champion Abner Mares and teasing a potential fight, the WBA has placed Mares from No. 5 in its featherweight rankings, to No. 5 in the super featherweight rankings.

5. After losing to WBC minimumweight champion Wanheng Menayothin, Pedro Taduran went from No. 10 in the WBA rankings in July to unranked in the August rankings.

6. British prospects Joshua Buatsi and Joe Cordina have been inserted into the light heavyweight and lightweight rankings, respectively. Buatsi is now ranked No. 12 while Cordina is ranked No. 15.
