Review: Miz & Mrs. (S01E06) Cowboy Miz

After a disappointing showing last week, Miz & Mrs. bounced back strong in their season finale. Surprisingly, however, the leads had very little to do with this. Mike and Maryse are dealing with “new house” problems. They’re only ever interesting when accompanied by Marjo, the breakout star of the series.

Cowboy Miz picks up directly where Road Trip Mania left off, with the Mizanin’s arriving at their new Texas Castle. Delayed furniture, lost dogs, and hired “arrangers” are the latest obstacle, but Miz and Maryse both shrewdly point out (while eating caviar) that these are good problems to have in the grand scheme of things. Their chemistry and authenticity have been a treat to watch. I’ve grown attached to them as characters and look forward to seeing them develop more in season 2.

MarjoMania ran wild all over this episode. There were too many laugh out loud funny moments to pick a favourite. The first came when Mike brought Marjo to a medical supply store to purchase masks and gloves. She got ahold of an electric scooter and wreaked havoc on the shelves, driving around like a belligerent drunk. When they left the store, it reminded me of the scene in Couples Retreat when Vince Vaughn’s son pee’s in the showroom toilet. All he could do was awkwardly say sorry. Miz was left to do the same here.

The second, and arguably best, sequence came when Mike brought Marjo and Maryse to a Dude Ranch.  On the drive out we learn that Marjo has a thing for Cowboys with man hands (insert Seinfeld reference here). She winds up making several passes at the gentleman working. Marjo also had a run-in after she was presented with a pony to ride. Her “excuse me, but what the f*** is this” response could not have been any better. The show would not be the same without her, and it’s imperative that she continues to be featured heavily.

All in all, this was an exceptional debut season. The episodes were quick and never felt disingenuous. Miz & Mrs. offered something for everyone; laughs, tears, tender family moments, etc. I’m guessing season two will focus more on raising Monroe Sky, and if movies and TV have taught me anything, it’s that parenting provides endless story opportunities. I’m expecting great things.
