Xavier Woods Declares “New Day Will Never Turn”
Xavier Woods made an emphatic statement on the status of The New Day.
The trio of Woods, Big E, and Kofi Kingston debuted in 2014 to a rather tepid reaction. In the four years since, they’ve become one of the most successful stables in WWE history, holding the record for longest Tag Team Title run. Last Thursday on SmackDown, they began their fifth reign as WWE Tag Team Champions.
Doing some promotional work for WWE 2K19, Woods spoke to GiveMeSport about a potential New Day split.
“I don’t remember a group in wrestling that hasn’t turned on itself, or they’ll turn, then come back and be a group again. New Day – I’m telling you this right now – New Day will never turn. Ever. And that’s because we have zero desire to ever do that. I have zero desire to go to work and not work with my friends.”
Woods continued, “People say on Twitter ‘Oh, New Day’s doing this, Big E’s going to turn and this is happening’ or ‘Woods is the snarky one, he’s going to turn’ or ‘Kofi’s been at the top of the mountain before, he’s going to turn’. Why? We’re having the most fun we’ve ever had in our careers. It’s not like anyone’s said ‘I need to sabotage my friends to be champ!’ – what is it to be champ when you’re champ by yourself?”
Wood went on to say that if one member of New Day is the World Champion, they are all the World Champion.
And if you believe Woods is saying this in-character, he peeled back the curtain to show just how serious he is about not turning on his friends.
“There’s your answer, internet! We will all retire before we turn! And this is not ‘oh he’s saying this because it’s happening! My government name is Austin Watson! Austin Watson is telling you: that is the truth.”
The group has parlayed their on-screen success with thriving ventures away from the ring. They are always among the top merchandise sellers. Woods’ YouTube gaming channel UpUpDownDown just entered the Guinness Book of World Records for Most Subscribed-to Celebrity Video Gaming Channel. Kingston and Big E make regular appearances on the channel.
