GSP Wants To See Celebrities Fight In The UFC
Former two division UFC champion Georges St. Pierre has seen a lot of amazing things in his decade-plus run in the UFC.
Celebrity involvement in the UFC has been kept exclusive outside of the Octagon, but that’s something GSP wants to see changed.
“Now, you can be the elite, but it’s like a reality show, too,” St. Pierre said during a press conference in Australia. “The world has changed, and I think we need to evolve with it. (UFC) became more mainstream, and to attract more mainstream people, you need to have more mainstream athletes. I think it’s a good thing. But let’s not confuse who’s who.”
The most recent celebrity who wants to step into the Octagon is Youtube personality Logan Paul, who said he could fight by the end of the year.
Another reason GSP wants to see a bigger celebrity involvement in the UFC is to help off set some costs since WME-IMG bought the promotion a while back.
“We’re entertainers, and because we’re entertainers, the decisions are made for money, especially, I believe, since the UFC has been sold,” he said. “They have a big debt to pay, and they have to take care of business. I know it’s frustrating sometimes, but I think it needs to be a mix of both.”
There have been no plans announced yet by anybody in the UFC as to whether or not celebrity bouts will get added to future cards.
