Joe Joyce Wants To Fight Luis Ortiz, Make A Statement

Heavyweight prospect Joe Joyce has only been boxing as a pro for only 10 months and he’s already calling out a top 10 heavyweight.

Joyce, who has fought just five times in his pro career, winning all five of his fights by knockout, has said he would like to test himself against former heavyweight title challenger Luis Ortiz. Joyce spoke to Boxing Scene where he said he’s ready for anything that it would be a good challenge to face Ortiz, though that would be a fight he says probably should happen some time in the future but not necessarily now.

The 32-year-old Joyce said he likes to break records and wants to make a statement by beating a heavyweight who gave Deontay Wilder his toughest challenge yet as the WBC champion when he and Ortiz met this past March.

“I like making statements. Like my debut was a 10-round main event. I won the [British] commonwealth title in my fourth fight, so I like to break records and be the first to do things. That’s what I wanna do. Hopefully I can get to a world title in record time, too,” Joyce said.

Joyce was in California having a trial run with famous trainer Abel Sanchez and see if the two were a good fit. Joyce ultimately chose Sanchez, who trains Gennady Golovkin, as his new trainer and even appeared on the July 28 boxing card from Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Ortiz fought on that card, knocking out former title challenger Razvan Cojanu in the second round of their fight. That fight took place in the co-main event of the Showtime Championship Boxing card headlined by Mikey Garcia vs. Robert Easter Jr.
