WBA Super Flyweight Champion Kal Yafai Said He’ll Fight Again In October
WBA super flyweight champion Kal Yafai has already laid out when he’ll fight against and mentioned a couple of names he would love to fight.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Yafai said he wants to fight the best boxers in the super flyweight division, which he thinks are former world champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez and WBC champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. Yafai also stated that he plans to fight back in the United States towards the end of October.
“I’ll be fighting [in the United States] again towards the end of October and it’s something I will do more and more. It’s good to build a base there as well as here in the UK… The fight I would ideally like is against Sor Rungvisai, the No. 1 at the minute, he’s up there in the pound-for-pound ratings and the man to beat… There were previous talks of the Gonzalez fight and I’d love to face him, he’s a legend who has put the little weights in the limelight,” Yafai said.
Yafai most recently fought in the co-main event of the May 26 Top Rank Boxing card streamed on ESPN+, defeating David Carmona after Carmona missed weight the day before. The main event fight was Jerwin Ancajas’ IBF super flyweight title defense against Jonas Sultan with Ancajas successfully retaining his title. The card, made in conjunction with Top Rank and Matchroom Boxing who promote Ancajas and Yafai, respectively, was put together in hopes of setting a unification fight between the two champions.
On the subject of Ancajas, Yafai said he “wasn’t too impressed” with the IBF titleholder’s performance, adding that he would be in for a “very hard night’s work against any of the other champions.”
