Jerry “The King” Lawler Details The Series Of Events That Led Up To Him Having His First Wrestling Match
Lawler tells his story.
WWE Hall Of Famer and Memphis wrestling legend Jerry “The King” Lawler will be in in-ring action this Saturday at the ‘Dickinson County Fairgrounds’ in his home-state of Tennessee. Lawler’s roots in wrestling go back to Tennessee, particularly Memphis where he established himself as an in-ring performer and winning a total of 168 championships throughout his storied career.
The 68-year old Lawler has been in the game since the early 70’s and is still going strong. While speaking with his home-state news publication the ‘Tennessean’, Lawler discussed the series of events that led up to him having his first wrestling match and he also spoke on Aubrey Griffith who is the promoter that gave “The King” a chance.
“When I started my career in the early 1970’s, I was living in Hendersonville,” Lawler said. “During that time, the promoters and the wrestling office was based out of Nashville. I was all around Dickson County, and we did a lot of…shows around the area. There are a lot of great wrestling fans in that area. It’s been a long time since I’ve been there, so I’m looking forward to being back there this Saturday.” Lawler continued, “Aubrey Griffith was the first wrestling promoter at the time that I ever met. I had never even been in a wrestling ring. I was also a D.J. on a radio station, and I told him I would match him some free plugs if he’d let me wrestle,” Lawler said. “But he was the first promoter to actually have a match in West Memphis, Ark. He was running a promotion over there. He had the old Avon Theater, which was an old dilapidated rundown movie theater that they didn’t use as a movie theater anymore. So, he set an old wrestling ring in there,” He added. “Every Saturday night in West Memphis, he would have his little matches. That was the first place I ever got a chance to wrestle.”
Jerry Lawler also went over a moment that he feels was the greatest thing to ever happen to his career. To read the full interview, click here.
