Gilberto Ramirez Talks Wanting To Unify The Super Middleweight Division

With a fight against Alexis Angulo coming soon, WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto Ramirez has unification fights in his mind for the future.

During a recent media workout, Ramirez expressed his desire to fight the other world champions at 168 pounds, but stopped himself short of further elaborating on who he wants to face as he said he is prepared for his upcoming title defense against Angulo.

“I am looking for unification fights. That’s what I want. But first things first. We have a tough fight with Angulo, and after that, we are looking at any of those fighters. Let’s do it. Let’s make it happen,” Ramirez said.

The WBO champion might have to wait a bit after his fight against Angulo to get that unification fight. IBF champion James DeGale has a mandatory challenge coming up against interim champion Jose Uzcategui, WBA “super” super middleweight champion George Groves is fighting in the World Boxing Super Series later this year and WBA “regular” champion Tyron Zeuge has his next title defense already set up. WBC champion David Benavidez could be facing Anthony Dirrell as Dirrell recently told FightHype he is in line to face Benavidez.

In the meantime, Ramirez’s fight against Angulo will headline the June 30 Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card in Oklahoma City. Ramirez, undefeated at 37-0, has held the WBO super middleweight title since 2016 and has made three successful title defenses. The WBO champion last fought in February when he stopped Habib Ahmed in the sixth round of their bout, which was televised on ESPN as well.
