Sergio Pettis Wants Flyweight Title Shot Next

Sergio Pettis picked up what was arguably the biggest win of his professional MMA career with a split decision victory over Joseph Benavidez at UFC 225

The top ranked fighter doesn’t mince words on what he wants next, which is a shot at the UFC Flyweight Title.

“One hundred percent, that’s what I want,” Pettis told MMA Junkie. “That’s what Benavidez was looking forward to after this fight. I went out here and got the job done, and I believe that’s what’s next for me.”

UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson is defending the gold against Henry Cejudo in two months at UFC 227, which means that Pettis may have to wait a little bit before getting that shot.

Pettis has a lot of goals to achieve and one of them is to be the UFC Flyweight Champion by the time he is 26 years old.

“It’s the right timing,” Pettis said. “I’m growing up. I’m about to be 25. I’ve got goals that I’ve set for myself that I want to accomplish. At 26, I’m going to have the belt around my waist. We’ll see. Hopefully I can keep doing what I’m doing and just keep improving.”

If Pettis does win the belt one day, it would make him and brother Anthony Pettis the first set of brothers to hold belts in the UFC, as Anthony is a former UFC Lightweight Champion.
