Conor McGregor Claims He Was Supposed to Fight At UFC 224

Former two division champion Conor McGregor hasn’t been seen in the Octagon since defeating Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC Lightweight Title in the main event of UFC 205.

Last month, fans were treated to an electric UFC 224 card, which saw UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes retain her title with a fifth round TKO of Raquel Pennington.

According to McGregor, it was going to be himself in the main event of the UFC 224 card instead of the women’s bantamweight title fight.

That claim was made by the Irishman through Instagram:

While McGregor does mention there was an agreed upon date of May 12, which was the night of UFC 224, one thing the former two division champion neglects to mention is who the opponent would’ve been on that show.

According to a report from Ariel Helwani, a possible opponent for McGregor would’ve been former UFC Lightweight Champion Rafael Dos Anjos and they would’ve fought for the vacant UFC Interim Welterweight Title. Dos Anjos is now facing Colby Covington for that title this weekend at UFC 225, it will serve as the co-main event of the event.

There has been no comment from either Dos Anjos or the UFC on what was stated by McGregor or reported by Helwani.
