Tyson Fury’s Opponent Announced For June 9 Return Fight

With only three weeks remaining before his scheduled return to the ring, Tyson Fury finally has an opponent.

Fury will fight 39-year-old cruiserweight journeyman Sefer Seferi on the June 9 boxing card at the Manchester Arena in Fury’s highly-anticipated return to the sport he was once the world heavyweight champion.

Seferi briefly campaigned as a heavyweight in late 2016 when he lost to eventual WBA “regular” heavyweight champion Manuel Charr. Seferi sports a 23-1 record with 21 KO and briefly held the World Boxing Federation Intercontinental cruiserweight title.

Fury has not fought since shocking the world and defeating Wladimir Klitschko to win the unified WBA, WBO, IBF, Ring Magazine and Lineal heavyweight titles in late 2015. A rematch between Fury and Klitschko had been planned for 2016, but the fight ultimately fell through.

After a failed drug test and two very brief retirement announcements, Fury was either stripped or had vacated all but the lineal title, but eventually was given back his boxing license by the British Boxing Board of Control. Fury has stated that his plan is to eventually fight Anthony Joshua, who currently holds all three alphabet world titles that Fury briefly held, and WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.

Also on the June 9 card at the Manchester Arena is the vacant WBO super lightweight title fight between Terry Flanagan and Maurice Hooker.
