Chris Jericho Almost Replaced Shane McMahon At WrestleMania 34

Chris Jericho almost made a last minute trip to New Orleans for WrestleMania.

At WrestleMania 34, Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan faced Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens in a tag team match despite Shane McMahon having a health scare only a month before the event. On an episode of Talk is Jericho, Daniel Bryan and Chris Jericho spoke about the match which was Bryan's first match in years. Jericho revealed he almost stepped in for Shane McMahon when Vince McMahon called Jericho about the possibility.

"So a few weeks before WrestleMania, I get a call from Vince about Shane and his diverticulitis and he had an infection in his hand…He was like "we don't know if he can do Mania,'" said Jericho. "He's like 'I know you're doing a Fozzy show and I know you're going to watch WrestleMania with your fans. What would you think about coming to New Orleans, If Shane can't do it?," he continued.

Jericho asked Bryan if he knew about the back up plan and Bryan explained how he did not know completely.

"We're in this stage now where they don't tell the boys anything. They keep all the secrets from the boys because they are afraid the boys are all talking to the dirtsheets," said Bryan. "When I got to TV the next day I was like 'what are we going to do?' Certainly he can't be wrestling. They said 'Well, he says he's wrestling but we have a backup. And we think it's a really good backup.' I say 'who is it?' and they say 'I can't tell you,'" he added.

Bryan said he never got confirmation but he had suspected the back up plan was Jericho. Leading up to WrestleMania, Jericho said he was planning flights to be able to make it to WrestleMania 34 just in time but Shane McMahon made it to the match.
