WWE Championship Bout Between AJ Styles & Shinsuke Nakamura Ends In A Double Count-Out; Styles Retains The Title

The "low-blow" saga continues.

Tonight at WWE's 'Backlash' event "The Phenomenal One" AJ Styles put his WWE Championship on the line against his rival Shinsuke Nakamura for the third time this year. The two superstars' last match-up took place at the 'Greatest Royal Rumble' event in Saudi Arabia and during the contest they both became so engaged with trying to beat one another down that they were counted out by the official.

At WrestleMania 34 Shinsuke Nakamura fell short to AJ Styles and in-doing so failed to become WWE Champion. Since then "The King Of Strong Style" has been on a streak of "low-blowing" the WWE Champion. Their match tonight at 'Backlash' was converted into a No-DQ match to give the two competitors free range to tear one another apart.

In what was a back-and-forth contest the "low-blow" maneuver made its way into the equation numerous times throughout the match. Both Styles and Nakamura delivered their individual cheap shots. The end of the contest saw both men connect with their respective "low-blows" which dropped the pair to the mat. Styles & Nakamura were unable to answer the referee's count of ten and with the champions advantage on his side, AJ Styles retained the WWE Championship.

Fightful does have live on-going coverage of 'Backlash'. Also, there will be a post-event podcast where our very own Sean Ross Sapp and Alex Pawlowski will be reviewing the action that transpired during the show.
