Zolani Tete In Talks To Join Potential WBSS Bantamweight Tournament

While the World Boxing Super Series has yet to formally announce the weight class of its next tournament, it appears that the bantamweight division will get its turn to shine.

Mlandeli Tengimfene, who is Zolani Tete’s manager, revealed that tournament organizers have approached the WBO bantamweight champion about participating in a potential World Boxing Super Series bantamweight tournament.

“Already, we have been approached by the organizers of the tournament. They wanted to know if we are interested in the tournament. We said to them, they must wait for us to fight Narvaez and then we will consider their request,” Tengimfene told IOL.

Although the WBSS has yet to announce season two, but Richard Schaefer of Ringstar Sports did say he wants to make the next tournament focus on the lighter weight classes after the 168-pound and 200-pound tournaments conclude later this year.

The first WBSS tournament cruiserweight finals were supposed to take place later this month in Saudi Arabia but Oleksandr Usyk, one of the two boxers in the finals, suffered an elbow injury which postponed the fight. The fight is set to crown the first-ever undisputed WBA, WBO, WBC, IBF and The Ring cruiserweight world champion. As for the other WBSS tournament, the super middleweight finals does not have a date due to WBA champion George Groves recovering injuries suffered in his semifinal match against Chris Eubank Jr.

Other boxers rumored to be a part of a planned WBSS bantamweight tournament include former super flyweight champion Naoya Inoue, who is challenging for the WBA bantamweight title later in May. Tete is coming off a unanimous decision win over Omar Narvarez back in April.
