Gervonta Davis Downs Jesus Cuellar Three Times To Win WBA Title

Facing questions of how he will perform for the first time since missing weight last August, Gervonta Davis silenced all doubts with a dominating performance over Jesus Cuellar.

Davis knocked down Cuellar three times to capture the vacant WBA “super” super featherweight title in the opening bout of a Showtime Championship Boxing television card from the Barclays Center.

The fight started off well for Davis, who managed to counterpunch well against the aggressive Cuellar. Davis landed several brutal body shots and uppercuts and knocked down Cuellar in the second round. Cuellar was knocked down again midway through the third round and after getting back up, Davis unleashed a relentless assault on Cuellar until referee Benjy Esteves stopped the fight when Cuellar was knocked down a third time.

Davis now joins Alberto Machado as WBA super featherweight world champions. Although the WBA has said that it was to reduce the amount of WBA world champions per weight class, Davis said he would love to regain his IBF title and fight the winner of the Tevin Farmer vs. Billy Dib bout for the now-vacant IBF title.

“I want the IBF belt back and I’m ready to unify it with whoever wins the Farmer vs. Dib fight,” Davis said after the fight.

Having previously held the IBF super featherweight title, Davis wins his second world title at the young age of 23 years old. In his last fight, Davis was supposed to defend the IBF title against Francisco Fonseca in the co-main event of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor pay-per-view card, but Davis missed weight and was stripped of the title.
