Golden Boy Promotions Comments On Canelo Alvarez Suspension

Golden Boy Promotions, who promote Canelo Alvarez, already are planning Alvarez’s return to the ring once his six-month suspension is over.

In a statement, the company said it plans to have Alvarez fight on Mexican Independence Day weekend, which on this case would be September 15. Alvarez was handed a six-month suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for failing two drug tests for traces of clenbuterol back in February. Golden Boy Promotions continues to state that Alvarez’s failed drug tests came from Alvarez consuming contaminated meat in Mexico.

Below is an excerpt of Golden Boy Promotions’ statement where it mentions Alvarez’s possible next fight date.

“Canelo looks forward to returning to the ring in September for Mexican Independence Day weekend to represent Mexico and boxing in what will be the sport’s biggest event of the year. He is ready to continue his remarkable record of fighting at the highest level.”

Alvarez was supposed to fight unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in a rematch on May 5 in Las Vegas, but Alvarez’s suspension prevented that fight from happening. A Golovkin vs. Alvarez rematch could still take place on Mexican Independence Day weekend as the first fight between the two also took place on Mexican Independence Day weekend last year.

Golovkin is now fighting Vanes Martirosyan at the StubHub Center in Carson, California on May 5 with Golovkin’s WBA “super” and WBC middleweight titles on the line.
