Eddie Alvarez Explains Why He Did Not Accept Short Notice Fight At UFC 223
Eddie Alvarez said he would have liked to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov.
On Sunday, Tony Ferguson was taken off of the UFC 223 card and out of his fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov. Former UFC Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez told his instagram followers that he was asked to step in but he did not think it was possible on six days notice.
“It would have been great to be ready for that fight and be ready to step in and save the day. But unfortunately, I am way too big to make the 155 pound limit,” said Alvarez.
According to Alvarez he has gotten up to 190 pounds since his last fight. He said trying to get to Lightweight in six days would be dangerous.
“I'm heavier than I've been, because I haven't fought in a long time. I hold a lot of water, I hold a lot of glycogen because of how muscular I am. To make 155 on six days, it’d be impossible. I'd probably kill myself,” said Alvarez.
Nurmagomedov will meet UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway in a Lightweight fight in the main event of UFC 223. Fightful MMA will have live coverage and a recapping podcast for UFC 223.
