Alexander Gustafsson Wants Interim Title Shot

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier is preparing to challenge UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic for the gold at UFC 226.

Alexander Gustafsson is the #1 ranked light heavyweight in the UFC, which is why he wants a bout for the vacant UFC Interim Light Heavyweight Title.

”Me fighting D.C. [Cormier] for the real title, that opportunity went out the window,” said Gustafsson to ESPN. “I feel I earned my spot off my last performance — but here we are. With D.C. moving up, the next step for me should be for an interim title. I brought it up to the UFC. Let’s see what happens. All I know is that in my situation, whoever they put in front of me next, it must be for the interim title.”

Gustafsson has previously challenged DC for the light heavyweight title, suffering a decision loss to him at UFC 192.

The top ranked light heavyweight says its not fair to him that DC has moved up to challenge for the heavyweight strap.

”D.C. is moving up to heavyweight and that’s good for him and it’s good for the organization, but for me, the No. 1 contender, it’s not fair. It’s not fair at all. And no one knows what D.C. will do after this fight. He may put his gloves down and walk away,” says Gustafsson.

There is no word yet from the UFC as to whether or not Gustafsson will get his wish, but the fighter has been undefeated since the initial loss to Cormier.
