Scott Quigg Misses Weight, Ineligible To Win WBO Featherweight Title On March 10 ESPN Bout
Scott Quigg was ready to challenge for the WBO featherweight title on ESPN, but has now lost that chance by coming in almost three pounds during weigh-ins.
Quigg, scheduled to fight Oscar Valdez for the WBO title in the main event of the March 10 Top Rank Boxing on ESPN, weighed in at 128.8 pounds, 2.8 pounds over the featherweight limit. Due to Quigg coming in more than two pounds over the limit, he was not given a chance to drop the weight in a certain time frame.
The fight will continue as planned, but Quigg is no longer eligible to win the title if he defeats Valdez. Should Valdez lose the fight, then the title would be vacant. Valdez, on the other hand, made weight at 125.8 pounds. Per California rules, Quigg has been fined 20 percent of his $100,000 purse, with 10 percent of that purse ($10,000) being given to Valdez.
Valdez has held the title since the summer of 2016 and has made three successful defenses of the title. His last fight, a wide unanimous decision win over Genesis Servania, also took place on a Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card. Quigg, the former WBA super bantamweight champion, has won his last three fights since losing a unification bout to Carl Frampton in 2016.
The co-main event of the Top Rank card is Andy Vences vs. Erick De Leon for the WBC Continental Americas vacant WBO International super featherweight titles. Both men were able to make weight. Other notable boxers scheduled to fight on the card are unbeaten super featherweight Alex Saucedo, Mike Reed and former heavyweight title challenger Andy Ruiz.
