Alex Hernandez Scores Huge Upset KO Of #12 Beneil Dariush At UFC 222

Coming into the fight as a +300 underdog, not many gave UFC newcomer a chance against Beneil Dariush.

Hernandez took the fight on extremely short notice, filling in for an injured Bobby Green on the show. When Fightful.com's James Lynch spoke to Hernandez last week, he remained confident in his notion that he would upset the top-15 ranked lightweight.

Hernandez gained criticism in the opening moments of the fight as he feigned a "glove tap" and went for a teep kick. Announcers took note of Hernandez's admiration of Bantamweight Champion TJ Dillashaw, and shortly after, Hernandez connected with a left hand that dropped the elder Dariush. Hernandez followed up and the fight was subsequently called to a halt moments later. Dariush joined Bryan Caraway as top-10 fighters who were defeated by unranked opponents at UFC 222.

As Lynch pointed out on Twitter, odds for Hernandez to win via TKO were slim.

"You didn't know me then, but I promise you now me now," Hernandez said following the fight.
