London’s First Women’s Wrestling School Has Officially Opened
Women’s wrestling continues to evolve.
Over the years, women in the field of pro wrestling have been making their way to the front lines of the business. Along with wrestlers all over the world; from various promotions and companies, they have all contributed to providing a personal spotlight to the women of wrestling.
That spotlight will stay lit, as recently in London, an all-women’s wrestling academy; EVE Pro-Wrestling, has launched and is underway for wrestlers to come and train. The classes are led by Irish-born pro-wrestler, Rhia O’Reilly who is a former Pro Wrestling EVE Champion, and former stuntman turned pro-wrestler, Darren Burridge. While speaking with Business Insider, O’Reilly provided a inside look as to what the women who enter the academy will be learning.
“We are teaching wrestling moves and wrestling training, but of course this is helping women become more confident and self-assured. Some of the holds that we’re doing are based on legitimate holds and things that they could use in real life.” O’Reilly said. “When you teach women to be physical, it makes them feel more safe and secure in their everyday life as well.”
The academy officially opened on February 11th and will continue to be available for women who look to pursue a career in pro-wrestling. The synopsis for EVE Wrestling’s academy reads as following:
“EVE events are the place to forget everything you thought you knew about this previously male-owned world and see what happens when punk, feminism and pro-wrestling combine to create a night of death-defying, jaw dropping, action packed theatrical wrestling stunts fueled with cabaret, comedy and so much more… And now you can train to become one of the future EVE Professionals at the EVE Academy – London’s School of Women’s Wrestling!”
