Dana White Wants Donald Cerrone To Stay Put At Welterweight
While everyone talked about Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz’s war at UFC 202 and Anthony “Rumble” Johnson’s brutal knockout of Glover Teixeira, Donald Cerrone also had one of the best performances of the night.
Since moving up to welterweight, Cerrone had not lost a single fight and his win against Rick Story, which earned Cerrone “Performance of the night” honors, proved to UFC President Dana White that the man nicknamed “Cowboy” needs to stay at welterweight.
Cerrone said after his fight against Story he wants a rematch with UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in November at Madison Square Garden. Cerrone holds a win over Alvarez that came in the champion’s UFC debut in September of 2014.
“I don’t like the ’55. He looked amazing at 170,” White told FS1 after UFC 202. “He’s on a roll. Nobody does that to Story, what he did to him tonight. Cowboy looks good at 170 and I’d like to see him stay there.”
This was the last fight on Cerrone’s UFC contract, but it appears that Cerrone will stay put in the organization. Cerrone spent the majority of his career at lightweight before losing to then-champion Rafael dos Anjos when they headlined a UFC on Fox card last December, snapping Cerrone’s eight-fight win streak. When asked if Cerrone can be given a title shot at welterweight, White said that he would consider giving him one.
