Josh Alexander Heard Eddie Edwards Was Going To Win TNA World Title From Him
Josh Alexander’s second reign as TNA World Champion lasted 336 days, which is the longest run of any TNA Champion in company history.
Alexander defended the title nearly 30 times during his reign.
Speaking to Chris Van Vliet on Insight, Alexander was asked if he knew the second reign would last as long as it did.
“Not a clue. Could have been 30 days, 60 days, whatever,” he said.
Asked when it kept going, Alexander said, “I’m probably the wrong person to ask this one. I always chalk it up to consistency and dependability. I had been told by somebody midway through it, ‘it doesn’t matter who we put you in there with, you’re always going to get the best out of them.’ That’s a great compliment and that’s what I run with. I always try to have my opponent’s best match possible. I think Eddie Edwards, they had talked about him winning the championship off of me at either the special before or on TV and me winning it back at Bound For Glory. I think it was in Nashville. I thought, ‘That’s weird. Okay. It doesn’t matter.’ I’m saying this in my own head. I remember Scott (D’Amore) saying something and I go, ‘You guys want to give it to Eddie and I’ll win back at BFG’ and he goes, ‘That’s not happening.’ He shut it down like that. It was a discussion in the creative room that was passed around, somebody liked it, and Scott was like, ‘No, absolutely not.’ I don’t know if it was in his mind that it would go beyond BFG into the longest reign or it was something that it transpired. I think around the Bully Ray match at Hard To Kill they were like, ‘He’s like 40 days away from being the longest reigning champion.’ They looked at it and that’s when they decided ‘Josh is going to take the mantle.'”
Alexander ended up relinquishing the title due to injury on March 24, 2023.
He noted that he thought the plan was always to lose the title to Steve Maclin at TNA Rebellion 2023. Maclin eneded up winning the vacant title at Rebellion by defeating KUSHIDA.
Elsewhere during the interview, Alexander commented on hearing rumblings about a NXT appearance. You can find his full commnts by clicking here.
