Miguel Berchelt Gets Third Opponent For February 10 WBC Title Defense

With a little more than a week before he is set to defend his WBC super featherweight title, Miguel Berchelt has a new opponent.

Berchelt will now defend his title against unbeaten Maxwell Awuku, who is now the third name that would have been set to fight Berchelt on that date. The fight will take place in Cancun, Mexico.

Zanfer Promotions made the announcement on Twitter. Below is the tweet in Spanish:

"Ghanan Maxwell Awuku (44-3-1, 30 KO) will be the challenger to WBC super featherweight world champion Miguel 'Alacran' Berchelt, who will defend his title en Cancun, Quintana Roo, broadcasting on Azteca 7 on another great card by Zanfer and MaxBoxing," the tweet says when translated to English.

Berchelt was originally supposed to defend his title against Cristian Mijares, but that fight fell through. OPBF super featherweight champion Carlo Magali was then put in as Berchelt's opponent, but the GAB announced that it has forced Magali out of the bout, refusing to allow him to return to the ring so soon after his January 13 win over Masatoshi Kotani.

Awuku has won his last four fights and is a former WBO Africa super featherweight titleholder. Awuku has never fought in Mexico in his professional career.

The 26-year-old Berchelt last fought in July, defeating Takashi Miura on HBO by unanimous decision. Berchelt won the title on January 2017 when he knocked out Francisco Vargas.
