He spoke to The Straits Times about Ferdinand, his latest film. But when it comes to Mandarin, he admits that he’s still far away from becoming a master of the language.
“I’ve been studying Mandarin for five years and I still speak like a third grader” he admitted.
Studying a new language takes a lot of effort. Cena does it to he can try and communicate with people in China so that WWE may be able to find a market there. Being such a busy guy, he normally carries flash cards around with him in a Ziploc bag and studies them for about thirty minutes.
“So, on the days when I want to just cruise through Instagram, I have to tell myself that would be fun, but do it after half an hour’s worth of cards” he told the site.
“And I try to listen to podcasts and watch CCTV” he said in added. “I just try to immerse myself in the culture as much as I can.”
It’ll be a long process. WWE has made inroads in China in recent years, including airing on television over there, but WWE is still an extremely niche product in the country.
“It’s a very slow process, but I do weekly videos on WeChat and it’s just winning people over one by one” he said.
WWE’s last tour in China was back in September for a Smackdown live event. They also have a number of Chinese recruits training at the WWE Performance Center.
