Mikey Garcia Believes He Could Be “The Biggest Star In Boxing Like Floyd Mayweather”

Mikey Garcia has a chance at joining an elite club in boxing and the WBC lightweight world champion believes he has what it takes to become the sport’s next mega star.

Garcia was in Los Angeles for the first press conference for his upcoming fight against Sergey Lipinets for the IBF junior welterweight title. It was in that press conference where he surprised media with his belief that he could be the biggest star in the sport similar to how Floyd Mayweather was during his time on top.

“I know that I have the possibility to be the biggest star in boxing like Floyd Mayweather, and I think I’m on track to accomplish tht. I don’t see a lot of guys in the sport with the resume of accomplishments that I have. I’m going to continue take on the best and beat my opponents convincingly,” Garcia said.

While it’s hard for many to believe Garcia’s words, both men already do share similar career accolades. Garcia is already a three-division world champion going for his fourth division world title. Mayweather has won world titles in five weight classes, four of which Mayweather held the lineal world titles. Both Garcia and Mayweather are unbeaten and at 37-0, the 29-year-old Garcia is only 13 wins away from tying Mayweather’s illustrious 50-0 record.

The fight against Lipinets will actually be Garcia’s second at 140 pounds. Garcia is coming off a win over four-division world champion Adrien Broner this past summer in Garcia’s junior welterweight debut. Even if Garcia wins the world title, he is expected to move back down to lightweight to fight Jorge Linares in a WBA/WBC lightweight unification bout.
