On the September 9th episode of WWE Raw, Kofi Kingston told his New Day teammate Xavier Woods that he got them a shot at the WWE World Tag Team Championship on the September 16th episode. Kingston noted that he scored them the title shot while Woods was off having fun and cosplaying at DragonCon. Woods said he thought that they were going after singles titles, but tag team championships meant money in winner’s purse as well, so they could keep building their legacy.
Finn Balor and JD McDonagh of The Judgment Day are the reigning champions. They have not defended the titles on WWE programming since they won the gold in June.

WWE later confirmed the title match for the September 16th episode of WWE Raw.
Collectively, The New Day are 11-time tag team champions on the main roster. Kingston and Woods have also held the NXT Tag Team Champions.
