UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor made his professional boxing debut this past August, suffering a tenth round TKO loss to Floyd Mayweather.
When it comes to a rematch between the two, Showtime Sports Executive Steven Espinoza says that it probably won’t be happening.
“I don’t think so,” said Espinoza to TMZ Sports. “Floyd seems pretty happy retired. I don’t think we’ll see him in the ring again, and it seems like the UFC really wants McGregor back in the cage. I doubt [it]. It’s Floyd’s call at some point, but I haven’t heard anything from him that makes it seem like he’s thinking about McGregor or anything else.”
Mayweather did announce his retirement after the fight, while McGregor has stayed silent on what his next move could be.
Despite saying the rematch probably will not happen, the longtime Showtime Executive says it is going to be hard for Mayweather to turn down a potential $300 million for a rematch.
“It is [tough to walk away from another $300 million] but at a certain point, 20 years in the sport, 22 years in the sport, at a certain point he’s given enough to the sport, so I don’t begrudge him wanting to retire,” says Espinoza.
Espinoza probably won’t miss McGregor that much, as the two got into it quite a few times in the lead up to the super fight.
