Exclusive: Kamaru Usman Says Colby Covington And Jorge Masvidal Turned Down Fights With Him
Top-15 ranked UFC fighter Kamaru Usman could be without an opponent UFC 219, but not for lack of trying.
As of now, Usman is slated to face Emil Weber Meek. According to Meek, he could be forced from the show due to visa issues, which may leave Usman out in the cold. Fightful.com's Showdown Joe Ferraro caught up with the #12-ranked welterweight ahead of Titan FC this weekend, and he said he knew about the issues weeks back.
"I've known for a while that he was having visa issues, which is why I tweeted a couple of weeks ago that the fight was offered to Colby Covington. Of course he said that was a lie. I have the text messages that the fight was offered to him. He said no. They offered Colby Covington again and he turned it down. They offered it to his partner Jorge Masvidal, and I think he's turned it down as well. I'm a sitting duck out here, nobody wants to get this work," said Usman
Covington has had a wild week, as he was hit in the face with a boomerang by Fabricio Werdum in Australia and sent home by the UFC after pressing assault charges on the former UFC Heavyweight Champion. Usman took aim at the two aforementioned American Top Team fighters in Covington and Masvidal.
"It's not hearsay. It's not the easy money tour as they claim, they turned down the fight. I know Sean Shelby and my manager are doing a very good job of trying to find someone worthy of stepping in there and competing against me," Usman told Fightful.
