Dustin Poirier Says Eddie Alvarez Should Be Forced Into Rematch

Dustin Poirier picked up a TKO victory over former UFC Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettis at UFC Fight Night Norfolk.

The lightweight contender also fought former UFC Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez at UFC 211 and Poirier feels that Alvarez should be forced to fight him again because Poirier says he cheated in their first encounter.

“I hope Eddie wins (at UFC 218),” Poirier said at the UFC Fight Night Norfolk post-fight press conference. “We can build this up into what it should be, a rematch I should have got before this fight even happened tonight. I should have gotten an automatic rematch.”

Alvarez faces former WSOF Lightweight Champion and fellow TUF 26 coach Justin Gaethje at UFC 218.

Poirier thinks that since Alvarez allegedly cheated in their fight, then the UFC shouldn’t have rewarded him with a TV show and big fight.

“He shouldn’t have been rewarded with a TV show, and more publicity, and another fight against another high-ranked guy,” Poirier said. “He cheated, and got out of a fight he was losing, and he should be forced to run it back with me. … I’m the guy who got robbed in that fight. He got rewarded.”

With his win at UFC Fight Night Norfolk, the Louisiana native now has a record of 6-1-0-1NC in the UFC Lightweight Division.
