Demetrious Johnson Willing To Move Up Weight Classes, If The Money Is Right
UFC Flyweight Champion Denmetrious Johnson broke the record for most consecutive title defenses in the UFC when he submitted Ray Borg at UFC 216.
The record breaking fighter is the only flyweight champion in UFC history and he is willing to take fights at other weight classes, but the money must be right.
“Make it worth my while. Show me the money,” Johnson said on The MMA Hour. “These guys are taking concussions. Like I said after the fight, I’m not in the business to get concussions. I do not like getting hit. I can take a hit, but I don’t want to damage my brain if I don’t have to.”
Prior to the creation of the flyweight division, the flyweight champion did compete at bantamweight and challenge then bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz at UFC On Versus 6.
Johnson would also like to protect his record against other champions who may try and break it down the line.
“There’s going to come another guy down the road who’s going to be aiming for my record, so my job is to set the bar high. And Joanna Jedrzejczyk, she’s at six. So you know what, she might want to keep on going and try to break my record, and I can’t allow that. So I’ve got to set the bar higher, that why she’s like, ‘F–k that, I’m not going to go for 20. I’m done. I did eight or nine, I’m done,’” says Johnson.
If Johnson were to move up to another weight class while flyweight champion and win another belt, then he would join UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor as the only two fighters in UFC history two hold two belts at two different weight classes at the same time.
