On the April 15 episode of WWE Raw, Sami Zayn defended the WWE Intercontinental Championship against Chad Gable in his hometown of Montreal. Ahead of the match, Zayn got a special entrance as he was shown walking backstage, and he came out through the crowd to a huge ovation.

Gable and Zayn then battled it out in a hard-hitting match while Sami’s family watched on at ringside. Gable repeatedly targeted Zayn’s ankle, but Zayn persevered as he refused to give in. Even when Gable made him bleed, Sami kept fighting as he dove to the outside and later hit Gable with some suplexes. In the end, Zayn clinched the win with a Helluva Kick.
After the bell, Gable was clearly emotional, but he raised Zayn’s hand and walked away. However, it was all a ruse, as he attacked Zayn while he celebrated with his family. Gable then wrenched Zayn’s ankle in a brutal ankle lock.
