Roman Reigns: I Didn’t Want To Break Up The Shield, And I Didn’t Want To Be A Good Guy

Roman Reigns reflects on the end of The Shield.

The Shield (Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose aka Jon Moxley) made an immediate impact when they joined the WWE main roster at WWE Survivor Series 2012. The group would run roughshod over WWE until Rollins turned his back on the group in 2014.

While Rollins and Ambrose engaged in a feud, Reigns was set on his own path to superstardom, which ultimately got him rejected by the fans.

On A&E Biography: WWE Legends, Reigns commented on the end of The Shield, and how he didn’t want it.

“I didn’t wanna break up The Shield, and I damn sure didn’t want to be a good guy. That’s exactly what was happening. I was so young on the rise. It’s not like I had a nest egg built up. It’s not like I had a whole bunch of options that I can just say ‘No I’m not feeling this. This doesn’t feel good to me or I wouldn’t say this.’ It was so hard to do that when you don’t have that backup, when you don’t have that ‘fuck you’ money, and you can’t just stand on your art and your family is depending on you. Your livelihood is depending on you. You have to just be a good soldier and do what you’re told,” he said.

Less than a year after the Shield broke up, Reigns would headline WrestleMania 31, his first of four straight WrestleMania headlining bouts.

Reigns will headline both nights of WrestleMania 40, competing alongside The Rock to take on Cody Rhodes & Seth Rollins at night one and then defending the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Rhodes at night two.
