Jim Ross Says You Can’t Compare Omega/Okada Bouts To Great Matches Of The Past

Jim Ross is not quick to call Okada versus Omega the greatest match ever.

Last Saturday, Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada met for the third time this year at New Japan Pro Wrestling's G1 Climax. Before this year, the two wrestlers had never met before in a singles match. All three matches have received critical acclaim from almost everyone. Jim Ross wrote in his blog that he is weary of comparisons of Okada and Omega to Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat.

"I get a kick out of some people trying to intelligently compare the recent Okada-Omega bouts to Flair-Steamboat as I feel that it is impossible to make valid judgments on matches that were held in totally different eras. I do agree that everyone has their own opinions of which we all should respect but to honestly say that any match is the greatest of all time, including the amazing, Flair-Steamboat bouts is iffy," wrote Ross.

According to Ross, declaring a match or wrestler "the greatest ever" is impossible. Ross said there is no "documentable way" to compare wrestlers and matches from different eras. He also made sure New Japan Pro Wrestling fans would not get angry at him for his statement about Okada versus Omega.

"Before NJPW loyalists revolt, I am not disrespecting any of the work done by Okada vs Omega and look forward to calling their G1 bout on AXSTV in a few weeks. Both are amazing talents," wrote Ross.

Ross has been commentating in delayed broadcasts for New Japan Pro Wrestling. He will be doing the same for The G1 Climax on AXS TV. Fightful Wrestling provided live coverage for the original broadcast of Omega and Okada's match and a recapping podcast
