Jon Jones Says Fighting In NY Doesn’t Make Much Sense
UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones recaptured the title he never lost when he defeated Daniel Cormier at UFC 214.
Jones could fight in the state of New York one day, but its an opportunity that doesn’t make much sense to the champion.
“To be honest, I love being from New York, but my whole thoughts and dreams of fighting in New York – they’re kind of starting to fade,” Jones told MMA Junkie. “Looking at it from a business standpoint, it’s not a really good idea to pay nine percent to the state of New York off the top just for fighting here. With nine percent of every $1 million, that will add up real quick.”
The UFC has only held a handful of events in New York since MMA became legal in the state, with the next one being UFC 217 this November.
As far as his next opponent goes, the light heavyweight champion feels a rematch with Alexander Gustafsson is next.
“Every fight gets my blood flowing,” Jones said. “I know how important it is to never underestimate anyone. I get up for everyone. I think the Gustafsson fight is an option for us right now. We’re just going to wait and see. We’re weighing our options right now.”
Gustafsson and Jones first met at UFC 165, that is where Jones picked up a unanimous decision win.
