Will Ospreay shares his thoughts on adjusting to being on American television.
Will Ospreay had been one of the top stars in NJPW, but he is facing a new challenge now as he joins AEW full-time. Ospreay wrapped up with NJPW in February and made his first appearance as a contracted member of the AEW roster on the February 28 episode of AEW Dynamite. Ospreay then defeated Konosuke Takeshita at AEW Revolution.
During the AEW Revolution post-show media scrum, Will Ospreay was asked to discuss his mindset regarding coming to AEW and being on American television. He was specifically asked whether he felt he had to change his style, or if he was going to be himself.
“I mean, the one I’m doing my best to do is I’m trying my best not to swear. My god, that is so hard. Even cutting promos now, that is a real hard task for me. I’ve never done it to an American audience. A lot of our stuff in Japan was always backstage. So I knew when I wanted to make the jump, I’m really trying hard at that, really trying to learn that style. I’m all new at this. Everything that you see right in front of you is all gonna be me experiencing something completely new. But my mindset right now is like, I have been screaming down the lens of a Japanese camera that I am the best in the world. Right now, I’ve never done this. I’ve never been full-time in America, and it’s a lot of things, but it’s mainly an anxiety of like, for ages, I know [I can deliver] when the bell rings, but it’s not just the bell ringing anymore. It’s about showing personality, it’s about connecting with the crowds. That’s my main focus now. I want to show my personality because I think I’m a little of a cheeky bugger, so I like to show that off. This is gonna be hard to work out the navigation, but I’m ready. I’m ready to do it. I’m ready to be completely vulnerable out there. If I mess up, chant, ‘You fucked up’ to me. I don’t mind. I’m here to learn, and I’m doing my best. Obviously out there tonight, I think if that’s the first thing that I’ve got, everyone’s fucked [laughs],” Ospreay said.
During the scrum, Ospreay also stated that his AEW schedule was full-time, as he wanted to be there every week. Check out his comments here.
